Welcome to the Modern Languages website.  We offer four languages  in the Middle School and six languages in the High School.

Students in the Middle School generally take FLEX in grade 6.  They then choose a language for their course of study from grades 7-12.  We offer French, Italian. Mandarin and Spanish in FLEX 6. As of September, 2012, 7th graders can also study Mandarin 7.  For those students whose schedule cannot accommodate FLEX in grade 6, we offer FLEX 7.  This course provides 10 weeks each of Spanish and Italian on an alternate day basis. We strongly encourage all students to complete a three-year sequence in their language of choice and to pass the New York State Checkpoint B Examination.

Additional courses are available beyond Level III through our college program in conjunction with St. John's University.

We offer Spanish I and Italian I at the High School for students who either need to complete Checkpoint A or who wish to learn an additional Romance Language.

In September, 2007, we introduced Mandarin Chinese I.  This course is open to students in grades 11 or 12 who have taken a three-year sequence in another language and who have passed  the Checkpoint B Examination.  Students may take Mandarin II upon successful completion of Mandarin I.

American Sign Language I and II have recently been added to our language offerings.  American Sign Language I is open to students in grades 10-12.  Students learn finger spelling, basic vocabulary, develop receptive and expressive skills, and learn about deaf culture.  In American Sign Language II, students advance their receptive and expressive skills and increase their knowledge of deaf culture.
