English As A Second Language (ESL) | ||
Mrs. Villalobos (pm) Fork Lane is fortunate to be home to students coming from many ethnic and language backgrounds. Some of these students receive English language support in our ESL program. Second language learners typically become comfortable in social language after two to three years; however, native-speaking academic proficiency can take six years or longer to obtain. Our goal is to enrich vocabulary, perfect pronunciation, increase oral fluency, practice correct grammar and improve reading and written expression. We provide support for mainstream classroom work as well. It is also important that our students have a sense of American culture and norms. We elaborate on the holidays and familiarize our students with American nursery rhymes, children's songs and literature. We also strive to instill a sense of pride and appreciation in the backgrounds they bring with them. We discuss a variety of worldwide holidays and customs. In this light, we host an annual Chinese New Year celebration complete with a dragon dance throughout the building. Tolerance and appreciation are the goals and gifts of a multi-cultural classroom!
