Students in grades K-5 have been participating in a unit focusing on fitness. More specifically students have been working on age appropriate activities that focus on increasing their cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. Students havealso been introduced to many new health and wellness concepts as well as vocabulary. At the end of our fitness unit all students will participate in the Presidential Fitness Challenge. The Presidential Challenge is a fitness assessment for students in grades K -12. All students will participate in the physical fitness tests. They are: curl ups, push ups, pull ups, sit and reach, and the shuttle run. When the weather permits, students will finish their fitness testing by participating in an age appropriate long distance run.
The month of May is also all about Field Day activities for the students of Woodland. Field day will take place on May 20th with a rain date of June 7th. Students are busy reviewing previously learned skills and activities as well as applying those skills in new games and activities that will be a part of field day. Students are also learning about what good sportsmanship and team cooperation looks like. Students in the intermediate grades are exploring the advantages good sportsmanship and team cooperation have, as they pertain to both the individual and to the group.
We cannot wait to demonstrate everything we have learned throughout the year in Physical Education during that day. We look forward to a day filled with good weather in addition to lots of team activities and games. We hope to see you there!
3-5: Students in grades 3-5 are also learning how to bowl. More specifically students are learning the footwork of a 2/4 step approach as well as the ball position during the approach. Bowling vocabulary is being introduced in addition to scoring procedures. Students are also working cooperatively within their lanes to set up the pins after each turn.
K-2
Students in grades K-2 are working on striking skills. More specifically on eye hand coordination while striking balloons. Students are learning how to hit and manipulate balloons while using their hands, head, shoulders, elbows, knees, and feet. Students are also applying movement concepts while working with the balloons. Those concepts are: different types of force, levels, patterns, and mirroring.
3-5
Students in grades 3-5 have just started a unit on volleyball. They have been working on their forearm and set passing as well as their underhand and overhand serving. As we begin to play modified volleyball activities students will also learn the rules and rotations involved in volleyball. Emphasis will also be placed on teamwork and good sportsmanship throughout the unit.
K-2:
Students in grades K-2 are working on their manipulative skills. More specifically students will work on ball handling. They will explore the various ways they can roll, bounce/dribble, throw and catch a ball. Working on these skills will help to improve eye hand coordination. Students will also have the opportunity to work in small groups with the focus on cooperating effectively. We look forward to applying our newly learned manipulative skills and locomotor skills in many fun, low organizational games.
3-5:
Students in grades 3-5 are starting a unit on basketball. Students will be focusing on dribbling, passing, shooting, and pivoting. We look forward to applying these skills in basketball lead up activities. In addition to the skill portion of basketball students will be focusing on having good speed and agility as well as increasing their heart rates during the warm up and skill portion of each lesson.
K-2
Students in grades K-2 are having fun traveling on scooters. Students are traveling on their scooters on their bottoms, knees, and stomachs. In addition to traveling around the gymnasium at different speeds students are reviewing the different pathways, as well as different directions.
3-5
Students in grades 3-5 have been playing modified games of European Handball. Students are applying their throwing and catching skills into this fast paced cardiovascular game. Students are also learning/reviewing how to pivot, make quick decisions, and how to cooperate in a team setting.
K-2
Students in grades K-2 are working on manipulative skills. More specifically on manipulating a ball and stick handling while using pillo polo sticks. Students are learning how to control and manipulate different objects while using their hands and pillo polo sticks. In addition students are learning/reviewing the different pathways, types of force, as well as different directions.
3-5
Students in grades 3-5 have been playing Pillo Polo. Pillo Polo is a modified game of hockey. The sticks have big foam spheres around the bottom of the stick that the students can hit and manipulate the ball with. Students are focusing on their cardiovascular fitness, stick handling skills, passing, shooting, and teamwork as they participate in Pillo Polo.
K-2
Students in grades K-2 are learning all about loco motor movements. We are having fun traveling around the gymnasium while jogging, skipping, galloping, hopping, jumping, sliding, and walking backwards. While we are traveling we are also working on having good self-space and good body control.
3-5
Students in grades 3-5 are working on their soccer skills. All students are working on dribbling, trapping, passing, shooting, and punting a soccer ball. We will also be learning different offensive and defensive strategies while participating in small sided games.
