On the evening of Friday, April 26, many students returned to school dressed in their pajamas so that they could participate in Story Time at Burns Avenue. The program was presented so that the children could listen to the reading of award-winning books by the staff of Burns Avenue.
On April 19th, Mrs. Reiner, Burns Avenue's ESL teacher, presented a workshop about an on-line reading program to ESL students and their parents. The workshop highlighted an exciting way that parents can enhance their child’s literacy skills through the use of a website called Raz-Kids.
During the months of March and April, the students in Burns Avenue participated in the program Soles4Souls. Soles4Souls is an organization that collects gently worn shoes and then gives them to needy people in countries around the world.
Special Person's Day, which was held on Friday, March 22, was a very special day in Burns Avenue. Parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends came to the school so that they could visit students in their classrooms and participate in some educational activities together.
During the month of March, the Burns Avenue Student Council sponsored a series of events to increase school spirit. During the month, students played Jeopardy, dressed in clothes from the past, and wore their pajamas to school.
On Tuesday, March 12, the Burns Avenue PTA recognized the winners of the PTA Reflections Program at its monthly meeting. This year, there were six winners in the contest that was entitled “The Magic of a Moment."
Twenty-five Fifth Grade students participated in the Little Doctors Program, which was run in conjunction with the Blood Drive that occurred in Burns Avenue on Tuesday, March 5th. The students assisted with the Blood Drive, which was conducted by Long Island Blood Services.
To commemorate Dr. Seuss’ birthday on Friday, March 1, students in Burns Avenue participated in the Read Across America Program. The goal of the program is to develop literacy and increase student interest in reading.
On February 22nd, Burns Avenue once again celebrated reading with the fifth annual Burnie Awards Ceremony. This year, the theme of the Burnie Awards was “One Hundred Years of Books."
Students in Kindergarten and First Grade celebrated the 100th day of school on Monday, February 25th. They participated in a number of activities that dealt with one hundred and the place value system.
