The 2014 graduating eighth grade class was celebrated at the Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, June 26th.
This year, 7th graders travelled to the Long Island Aquarium at Riverhead for their end-of-year trip on June 25th. They visited the butterfly exhibit as well as other amazing indoor and outdoor interactive activities. On the same day, eighth grade students travelled to New York City to the Intrepid Museum. The trip included a fascinating and history-filled tour of the Intrepid. Students enjoyed lunch before returning to the middle school.
Eighth grade students had a wonderful time at their end-of-year dance on June 20th. The weather was spectacular and the theme was a very apropos “Starry Nights”. The gymnasium was transformed in shades of blue and silver with the traditional mirrored ball suspended from the ceiling. Photo areas were available and included a dress up theme for those who wanted to add to the fun. Students danced for the entire evening and just had a great time. The night ended with a rousing rendition of “Let It Go”. It was the perfect way to end a special year.
The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association holds an annual poetry competition for students in grades 3-12. The purpose of the contest is to celebrate the poet Walt Whitman. The themes of the competition are inspired by Whitman’s poems, and each year a different theme is selected. This year was the 28th year of the competition and it generated approximately 4,000 entries. This year’s theme was “A Song of Joys.”
The Hicksville Middle Sports Awards were held on Tuesday, May 27th in the main gym at the middle school. More than 380 athletes were recognized for their participation in nineteen different sports teams offered at the middle school. Students were recognized for their efforts, improvement, and participation.
Twenty-three students performed in the Hicksville Middle School Piano Recital on May 13th. The selections ranged from classical to contemporary. One of the highlights of the evening featured a duet performance with Nicholas Hoene on piano and Brian Fong playing the violin. Congratulations to all the students who performed and their teachers Ms. Calleo and Mr. Nadler. The recital also featured student artwork from the classes of Ms. Ryan, Ms. Gottlieb, and Ms. Lupardo.
Sixth and seventh grade students attended the annual Courtyard Dance on Friday, May 16th. Although the weather did not cooperate, students had a great time dancing with their friends at their last dance of the year! They enjoyed a delicious barbeque dinner prepared by the PTSA along with an amazing variety of deserts!! There also participated in an exciting silent auction and raffle event.
Hicksville Middle School and the HMSPTSA co-sponsored a Blood Drive on Friday, May 16th, Thanks to the efforts of chairperson, Ms. Kinnaman, the blood drive was a huge success with 34 pints of blood collected. Members of the National Junior Honor Society assisted with the drive the Little Doctors. Many thanks are extended to all of our donors, who took the time to donate, and to all of our volunteers, who helped throughout the drive.
Two Hicksville Middle School students, who were recognized for their Reflections entries, will be moving on to the State level of competition.
