Second Grade
The second graders are in the
midst of a very busy fall. We’re taking a trip to Green Meadows Farm
on October 31st where we’ll learn about farm animals and
their babies. The children will ride ponies, milk a cow and hold many
different animals.

In math, we worked on
counting by 2, 5, and 10 as well as reading and making graphs. Now we
are studying addition and subtraction facts. We learned the meaning of
“grown-up” terms like The Commutative Property of Addition and The
Identity Element of Addition. We will work hard to find ways to
remember all of the addition and subtraction facts with sums and
differences to 18. Then we will learn about place value. We will
discuss the importance of “zero” and how using that numeral makes so
many other numbers.

The children are learning
about their body systems and ways to keep their bodies healthy.
We are
discovering the world around us in Social Studies. We are learning about the
different types of communities and how each one affects the others.
We will also study what our country was like in the 1620s when the
Pilgrims came to America. We will compare and contrast our lives to
theirs. We will make butter and cornbread. We learned about Columbus
and how he actually found a new part of the world that Europeans,
Africans and Asians never knew about.
