Third Grade
Language Arts
The third graders will be preparing for the New York State E.L.A.
exam that will be given in January. This exam will evaluate the
children’s reading, writing, and listening abilities. Our students
will learn a variety of techniques and strategies which will strengthen their
skills and enhance their knowledge in these areas. These methods will
assist our students by improving their performance in all aspects of
English Language Arts. To reinforce our students’ skills in this area,
we are requiring that they read at least thirty minutes each night at
home. This will help bridge the gap between school and home. We believe that
parental involvement is very beneficial.
Math
The state has
identified five content areas, which are: (Number Sense &
Operation, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Statistics and
Probability). The five process areas are (Problem Solving,
Reasoning, Communication, Connection, and Representation). Our
students will be provided with much knowledge and understanding of
mathematics so that they can become proficient in this area. For the
first time this year our students will be taking the New York State’s
mathematical assessment during the month of March.
Social Studies
Our social studies program consists of a curriculum in which children
will learn about communities in the
United States
and throughout the world. They will learn about social, political,
geographic, economic, and historic characteristics of different
communities in the world.
The countries of
China, Australia, Mexico, and a special European country will be
studied. A heritage festival is planned for the spring, which will be
an educational and enjoyable celebration for our students.
Science
In accordance
with the New York State standards, our science program promotes the
processes of scientific inquiry, involving the use of experimental
activities to utilize this Scientific Method. We will focus on four
different modules:
1.
Life Science
2.
Earth Science
3.
Physical Science
4.
The Human Body
Field Trips
We have
planned several field trips to enhance our students’ academic
experiences. We will be visiting the following places:
1.
Safety Town at Eisenhower Park
2.
Gregory Museum in Hicksville
We have also
arranged for three special science workshops to be conducted in our classroom
by the Long Island Center for Arts & Sciences.
We look forward to an exciting and interesting year with our third
grade.
