ESL students are excited about the arrival of 2009 and are sharing their
resolutions for the New Year.
January will be an interesting month for all of us. The New York State
English Language Arts assessment will be administered during the week of
January 12. Third and fourth grade students will continue to practice and
prepare for all
sections of this exam,
and we know they will do their best.
English language learners will read about the life
of
Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., whose birthday will be celebrated on January 19.
They will continue to expand their understanding of winter vocabulary and
concepts this month, as they read poetry and stories related to the
season.
First graders will investigate
how
the
winter
affects people and animals. Second grade students will study animal
behavior, needs, and habitats. Kindergarten students will continue to
learn about seasonal weather,
clothing and
activities. They will read and discuss a variety of children’s literature
as they practice listening and speaking skills.
Finally, at the end of this month, ESL students will learn
about and celebrate the Chinese New Year, which begins on January 26. Gung
Hay Fat Choy!
