"The Kindness Initiative"

"The Kindness Initiative"

A Hicksville Middle School tradition continued with a new twist this year with the help of creative genius Mrs. Powell, Mr. Tussie's kindness initiative is in full bloom. This year students pledged to show and treat others with kindness by attaching signed leaves to the kindness tree. A Kindness Tree is a way to focus on and acknowledge the importance of showing kindness within a school. The tree helps foster kind, supportive relationships among students and teachers. The tree will remain up throughout the school year as a constant reminder of how important it is to maintain a culture where students feel socially and emotionally safe. This tree started to grow in the beginning of the bullying awareness unit and came to full bloom by the conclusion.

Middle school students had this to say:

" I believe the concept of the kindness tree is very powerful. It shows how we all as a school can come together as one to show the importance of kindness. if you are kind, you will receive kindness back."

"The importance of the kindness tree is showing people that we all care about being kind and helping others."

"The kindness tree reminds us all to be kind each and every day. What comes around goes around."

"This is important because it expresses how people should act, and demonstrates to kids how they can be a part of it."

"The kindness tree can teach others the importance to be kind and why they should be."

The grant was awarded to Hicksville Middle School on behalf of the W20 Foundation. Hicksville Middle School won second place for the second consecutive year as part of the 2016 Holiday Season Challenge. In the fall, Mr. Tussie and Mr. Stueber collaborated in a school wide fundraiser where more than $1000.00 was raised for the Association for Children with Down Syndrome. This joint effort was an opportunity for student athletes to build character and empathy through the promotion of community service and social responsibility.

With the assistance from Major Matthew Luyster, a Hicksville class of 2001 Alumni, West Point Graduate and former Lacrosse player and Head Coach Tom Kinsella- the Varsity Boys Lacrosse program and parents visited the West Point Military Academy over the Spring Recess. Major Luyster is the Director of Lacrosse Operations at West Point and has been for the past two years. In June of 2017 Major Luyster is being transferred to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas to continue his Military Career. Major Luyster took the time to speak to the team and parents about his journey from Hicksville HS to West Point. He also discussed with the young men about setting goals for themselves and the team. He then proceeded to give a tour of West Point including the library, cadet dorms, mess hall and the historical grounds of West Point. Major Luyster took the time to answer questions from the team and parents. He also was also able to provide our team and coaches complimentary tickets to the Boston University vs. Army men's lacrosse game, which was won by Army 11-10! While upstate the Hicksville Lacrosse team played John O'Neill HS and came away with a 14-10 victory. This trip was truly an incredible team bonding and educational experience that could not have been accomplished without the efforts of Major Matthew Luyster a proud Hicksville Alum! Go Comets!

GYMNASTICS-FUND RAISING

Although the girls are preparing for post season competition, the varsity gymnastics team took time out of practice to participate in "Cartwheel for a Cure" , a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The girls performed as many cartwheels as they could in three minutes. Quite a dizzying experience indeed, but knowing they were once again giving to those in need made it all worthwhile. The girls raised $315 for their 625 cartwheels.

What made it even a more special event was knowing that the money raised was being donated in the names of the 4 and 6 year old daughters of one of our own Nassau County coaches who are unfortunately are fighting this genetic lung disorder.

HICKSVILLE GYMNASTICS

For the fourth consecutive year, the Hicksville girls' gymnastics team has "adopted" a child from the Lexibean Foundation. This is a nonprofit organization founded by parents whose children lost their battle with cancer.

As "Lexies Elves", the girls buy the toys and items that are on the child's wish list to help the family's Christmas be a little brighter and make some small dreams come true. The girls support and generosity certainly help to make a difference for a family battling the emotional and financial strain of pediatric cancer!

Congratulations girls on demonstrating the true spirit of Christmas.

EVENT AT MIDDLE SCHOOL
"WALK FOR A CAUSE: DOWN SYNDROME" - HEALTH DEPT.

111 112 113 1114 1115 1116 1117

This fall the Hicksville Middle School Health department conducted its 5th annual "Walk for a Cause." Event coordinator Anthony Tussie says "This was a tremendous opportunity to unite as a school community and to bring awareness and "do for" others." This years theme was Down Syndrome Awareness. Over $900.00 was raised for ACDS (Association for Children with Down Syndrome) located in Plainview.

Students in grades 6,7,8 walked the middle school track during health classes and Physical Education classes.

Here are what some eighth grade student participants had to say.

Scott Rothmann

"The walk for Down Syndrome was a good thing to catch the attention of people driving and walking by. To see us, the students of HMS walking for a cause will hopefully put the idea of donating to a charity in their heads. If all schools do this, then many more people will contribute.

Alejandro Gonzalez

"The walk brought our school together for a cause and it makes us feel like a community."

Nirpee Patel

"The walk was amazing! I loved walking because I wanted to help raise awarenss and show that this school cares about Down Syndrome."

Ethan Bellomo

"You know you are helping someone else which should make you feel good."

Ariya Bakhteri

"I enjoyed the walk because I knew that I was doing a good thing by walking and spreading awareness. I felt good about myself knowing I was contributing to a cause.
