Congratulations to Hicksville High School art teacher, Craig Mateyunas, for being named the 2020 Art Educator of the Year for Region 9 by the New York State Art Teacher Association. One art educator is chosen annually by each of NYSATA’s ten regions for their outstanding contributions to the field of art education and service to the state organization.

Mateyunas delivers student art to the community at every opportunity. Each year, he takes his students to the local McDonald’s to decorate the windows with winter scenes. He also helps to display student art annually at IKEA. Not only does Mateyunas share his students’ work with Hicksville, he motivates his students to help their community. Mateyunas spearheads the Empty Bowls fundraiser, an event that showcases hand-decorated bowls made by students while raising money for local food pantries.

“Pursuing my love of art and sharing it with my students is something I love to do every day. Being a part of helping others develop their artistic skills and build confidence in their abilities are one of the greatest aspects of my role as an educator,” said Mateyunas. “My work is a reflection of the talented, kind, hardworking students I am so fortunate to work with. I am extremely thankful to be a part of a district that is supported by the community, parents, and administration. Hicksville is a truly special place, and I am so happy to be a part of it.”

The district congratulates Mateyunas and thanks him for his devotion to the Hicksville Art Department and his students!
