Students at East Street School, part of Hicksville Public Schools, prepared for Earth Day by tending to the school’s garden and livening the playground with chalk art.

Mrs. Ferrara’s fourth grade class planted lettuce, radishes and pansies in raised garden beds donated by the Nassau County Soil and Water District. The fourth graders listened to the book, “Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt” by Kate Messner to explore the wonders above and below the garden soil. Students also brightened the playground ahead of Earth Day with chalk drawings of things our globe has to offer including trees, water and flowers.

The activity was organized by the East Street Green Team and its advisers, Mrs. Ketyer, Mrs. Shurley, Ms. Simon and Mrs. Stehle. It was part of Earth Day celebrations throughout the school and district. The Green Team is dedicated to learning and teaching about nature, conservation and sustainability.
