Students at Lee Avenue Elementary in Hicksville are encouraged to read daily and complete a daily reading log to enhance the school’s reading curriculum, a program known as Parents as Reading Partners (PARP), sponsored by the school’s PTA.

PARP encourages reading and asks parents and family members to read with their student at least 20 minutes each day. At Lee Avenue, PARP takes place from the beginning of October through the end of May.  The theme for this school year is “Lee Avenue Readers Among Us.”

Principal Stephanie Stam said, “Additional reading outside of school is essential in enhancing literacy skills as well as encouraging a love of reading.” Stam reiterated that reading is an integral part of the school’s curriculum and culture.

In conjunction with the daily reading logs, the PTA sponsors PARP theme days that celebrate class reading log milestones with a small prize and school-wide theme days such as Mix & Match Day, Superhero Day, Hat Day and most recently, Sports Day on April 13 that invited students to wear their favorite sports shirt. Principal Stam is very appreciative for the work the PTA does on behalf of the school and for their continued support of ongoing activities to keep the students engaged in reading.
