National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists!
Posted on 09/13/2019

Congratulations to Hicksville High School seniors Sarah Choi and Viveka Jain, who have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Sarah and Viveka qualified as semifinalists by scoring among the highest in the state on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year, ranking among the top 1% nationally. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awarded this distinction to approximately 16,000 high school students from the 1.5 million who took the exam nationwide. Both Sarah and Viveka and their fellow semifinalists will now compete for approximately 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Finalists will be announced in February, with the winners to be named in the spring.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered this spring. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 scholarships of $2,500. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 220 corporations and business organizations, and roughly 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100 college-sponsored awards for finalists who will attend their respective institutions.

Sarah plans to study education in her postsecondary career, while Viveka is considering the medical field, possibly cardiovascular surgery as a goal. Both are very involved in activities at Hicksville High School. Sarah plays the clarinet with the band and saxophone with the jazz band and is a member of the golf team as well. She also volunteers at her church. Viveka is a member of the Art Honor Society, Model UN, Robotics Club and Science Olympiad.

“I am extremely happy for Sarah and Viveka for this impressive honor and wish them well throughout the remainder of the competition and their senior year here at Hicksville High School,” Principal Ray Williams said. ‘They are two of our brightest shining stars who continue to make us proud and validate our efforts through their hard work and wonderful accomplishments.”
