This year, the New York State School Boards Association designated Oct. 22-26 as School Board Recognition Week to thank school board members for their commitment to New York public school children. As part of an annual Hicksville Public School District tradition, student representatives from each school expressed their gratitude for the members of the Hicksville Board of Education and all of their hard work and dedication during a ceremony held in conjunction with the October Board meeting.

The early morning rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the Hicksville faithful, and shortly after the annual Homecoming Fair at Hicksville High School began, the grey skies cleared and the only colors that reigned were the school’s signature orange and black. The Oct. 13 homecoming celebration proved to be an overall success, beginning with plenty of school spirit and ending with many happy football fans as the Comets, the Hicksville varsity team, defeated rival Westbury 26-6.

Two from HHS Honored as L.I. Scholar-Artists

Congratulations to students Katherine Jergensen and Ariel Yeh of Hicksville High School for being chosen as Long Island Scholar-Artist winners for the 2018-19 school year. They are two of only 20 recipients of the award this year, and Hicksville High School is the only school on Long Island to boast two Scholar-Artist winners this year. Each year the Long Island Scholar-Artist program honors exceptionally accomplished high school seniors in the areas of dance, media arts, music, theater or visual arts. The Long Island Arts Alliance sponsors the program in conjunction with the Arts Reach Fund, New York Community Bank and Newsday.

Three Named National Merit Semifinalists

Three Hicksville High School students have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Rohil Agarwal, Catherine Chen and Snehadri Das for scoring among the highest in the state on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year, including the top 1 percent nationally. Sixth Annual Bright Beginnings Backpack Project

On August 23, 2018, the Rotary Club of Hicksville South held a ceremony for the Sixth Annual Bright Beginnings Backpack Project. The Rotary distributed 700 backpacks filled with school supplies to local school districts and community organizations. Hicksville Public Schools received three boxes of backpacks to distribute to needy students.

On Wednesday, June 13, the Hicksville School District Board of Education unanimously appointed Marianne Litzman as Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2018. Mrs. Litzman will be replacing retiring superintendent Dr. Carl Bonuso.
