A pair of professional athletes shared their wisdom about the value of teamwork at Lee Avenue Elementary School on Nov. 19 during the New York Islanders annual School Day program.

Players addressing the student body during the afternoon assembly included goaltender Thomas Greiss and defenseman Adam Pelech. They said that being in school is just like being on a hockey team — it is important to work together and to show each other kindness and respect. Greiss and Pelech said that just as they have to listen to their coaches, students should always listen to their teachers.

The children, many clad in Islanders jersey, T-shirts and hoodies, were given the opportunity to ask the players questions. They inquired about their reasons for joining the Islanders, why they chose to play hockey over other sports and their favorite parts of the game. Greiss and Pelech signed a School Day poster as a gift for the school and also individual photo cards for the students.

“It really resonated with the students to hear from professional hockey players about teamwork, not giving up and overcoming failure,” Principal Stephanie Stam said. “These are life skills.”
