Judge Leads Fun Mock Trial at Fork Lane

Fork Lane Elementary School recently welcomed the Honorable Fernando Camacho, New York State Supreme Court Justice, to speak about his career, life and the judiciary system. While there, Judge Camacho organized a student-run mock trial in the school’s all-purpose room which focused on SpongeBob character Sheldon J. Plankton, a story the judge scripted himself.

Before court came into session, fourth-graders learned about Judge Camacho’s journey as a youngster arriving to this county from Cuba to being accepted by his fourth-grade classmates to his professional ascension as an attorney, prosecutor and then judge. He emphasized the importance of kindness and fairness, and how the kind treatment he received as a child inspired him to help others.

Judge Comacho appointed students to the roles of judge, jury, prosecutor, defense attorney, defendant, witnesses, and court officers and reporter. He guided students through the different stages of the trial before they convened to deliberate. The trial was both fun and informative. After the verdict was rendered and the court adjourned, students asked questions of Judge Comacho, which provided even further insight into his life and careers in the legal profession.
