Taking a Bite out of Hunger

Members of the Hicksville Middle School Student Council joined the combined efforts of Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Island Harvest to eliminate hunger on Long Island. On behalf of the student body, Student Council President Jeffrey Aguilar, Secretary David Adames, Treasurer Sara Russo, and sixth-grade liaison Matthew Smith presented a $1,000 check to Island Harvest for the purchase of turkeys for the Thanksgiving season.

Middle School Principal Mara Jorisch explained that the goal was to collect enough money to feed at lease fifty families. The funds were raised during various local and global initiatives last year by all of the school’s clubs.

Island Harvest President and CEO Randi Dresner wholeheartedly thanked the students for their contributions and explained that there are enough hungry children on Long Island to fill the seats of both Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. “Your efforts here this evening will start a ripple effect that will help to beat hunger in the future,” Ms. Dresner stated.
