Middle School Spelling Bee Winner Readies for Long Island Final

   Middle School student Jerry Hsiao endured sixteen rounds of intense competition to earn the title of Scripps National Spelling Bee School Champion during the final qualifying event. Jerry correctly sequenced the spelling of ‘telepathic’ to secure the victory and is advancing to the regional final at Hofstra on March 18. Schoolmate Neeloy Bose placed second and will serve as an alternate for the regional competition. The bee commenced with a group of eleven finalists who had advanced from the January 6 semifinal round.

    “Congratulations to all of the spelling bee finalists, especially Hicksville Middle School winner Jerry Hsiao and runner-up Neeloy Bose, who competed for a very exciting sixteen rounds,” said Principal Mara Jorisch.

    Participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee has become an annual event for the students of Hicksville Middle School. The competition starts with a round of classroom competitions in early January. The school championship judging panel consisted of Hicksville Schools Supervisor of English, Reading & Library Dr. Thomas Moss, Middle School Principal Mara Jorisch, Middle School Vice Principal Todd Wallace, and middle school teacher Rachel Zinner. Ms. Zinner and Petrice Grimaldi, who are part of both the middle school and high school English departments, were the co-organizers of the spelling bee.
