(FLEX) Foreign Language Exploratory Program

The students in Hicksville Middle School are enrolled in the FLEX (Foreign Language Exploratory Program) in grade 6. The FLEX program provides an introduction to Latin, Spanish, Italian, French, Mandarin, and ASL. Our FLEX program is provided to the 6th grade students on an every other (A & B) day schedule.

Our FLEX program teaches basic linguistic concepts such as the existence of language families and their relationships to one another. Students are introduced to basic phrases in a number of languages in order to sharpen their language acquisition skills. In addition, the FLEX program offers cultural information that can help students develop an appreciation of other societies and customs.

The program does not expect students to achieve fluency in a language at the end of the course. It is primarily a motivational program to pique students’ interest in a language and culture and to help students decide which language sequence to follow in 7th & 8th grade. It also serves to increase language enrollment in the high school.
