Foreign Language at the Elementary School (FLES)

FLES Program Website

Hicksville offers the Foreign Language at the Elementary School (FLES) Enrichment Program to all students in grades 3-5. Students have the opportunity to learn the Spanish language and culture. The goal is to give students a foundation for exploring and understanding Spanish-speaking cultures and people.

Students employ critical thinking skills as they compare the Spanish language and its cultures with those of their own community. They also connect to other academic subjects, such as math, science, and language arts, using their knowledge of Spanish to access new information.

Students acquire a second language much in the way that they learned their native language. With this in mind, all instruction is provided in Spanish. This approach encourages children to start using the language from the start, and engage in hands-on, communicative activities. Each student is asked to bring an open mind, a positive attitude, and lots of energy to class each day!

Our FLES teachers are specially certified language acquisition experts who have taken their love of the language and their passion for teaching to a whole new level of learning. Students are engaged in fun activities that develop an appreciation of the language and the cultures of native speakers of Spanish. Through FLES instruction, our teachers are impacting students for a lifetime.
