Fork Lane Students Enjoy “Books Alive” Program

Students at Fork Lane Elementary School in Hicksville recently experienced the magic of reading in a whole new way through the school’s annual Books Alive program. Led by Fork Lane librarian Christine Janda, this engaging Reader’s Theater initiative transforms beloved children’s books into lively performances featuring teachers and parents as the cast.
This year’s presentations brought several popular stories to life, including Creepy Carrots, Being Frank, and Chicken Big. Through expressive narration, creative props, simple costumes, and enthusiastic performances, students were immersed in the stories and inspired to see reading from a fresh perspective.
Books Alive was created to foster a lifelong love of reading and demonstrate that books can be both educational and entertaining. “Our goal is to show students that reading isn’t just something done quietly at a desk,” said Ms. Janda. “By bringing stories to life through performance, we spark imagination, encourage engagement, and help students connect with literature in a meaningful and memorable way.”
The program is turning into a favorite tradition at Fork Lane, delighting students while reinforcing the joy and importance of reading.
